Paparazzi is in actuality an Italian term.  It refers to photographic journalists who specialize in taking candid pictures of celebrities, politicians and other rich and famous people.  They tend to work independently and get paid for how valuable and rare their photographs are.  If they happen to catch someone doing something shocking, well, the price of this photograph can sometimes go “through the roof”.  As such, it is easy to see why many celebrities consider them great pests and annoyances.

In order to protect famous people from paparazzi various states and countries have enacted laws and curfews designed to restrict their activities.  In some cases they even stage events where paparazzi are barred from taking photographs all together.  This is especially the case in Europe where the actions of some paparazzi are considered to be “over the top” by many people.  In the countries of Germany, France and Norway for example, photographers need permission of the people that they photograph in order for these photographs to be released to the public.

Altercations with paparazzi tend to make front page news.  You may recall the incident where Leonardo DiCaprio was talking on his cell phone when he shoved the camera of a paparazzi who happened to venture too close.  Do you recall the incident where Miley Cyrus was getting groceries when the paparazzi allegedly pushed her mother?  An argument soon started as you can well imagine.

Being independent contractors if you will, paparazzi often require the best of photographic equipment.  Take the D7000 Nikon equipped with a telescopic lens to get those far away shots.  A tripod comes in handy in these situations as well.  The steadier the camera is the better the picture…and generally the more dollars you can make from it.

We’re not sure where all this is taking us as we boldly look into the future.  There is a need for privacy for famous people to be sure, but it can also be said that those who are in the public eye have often sought out this attention to get their careers off and running.  Balance is probably the solution to this problem…but human beings are not big on being balanced don’t you think?

John Nicholson, best known as the actor on recent popular daytime drama’s “General Hospital” and “All My Children” is teaming up with his long time friend Brent Owens, who is well regarded for directing some of the most popular documentaries in HBO history and also serving as Production Designer on the 1992 release starring Tupac Shakur titled, “Juice”.
